27th May 2018

A lovely gentle day on the pontoon (given the distraction of the Thurne Mouth Regatta for many members) and a not so gentle breeze. Good to see the club Laser 2000 out too, sailed by mother and daughter Butters. Ideal conditions for racing and many classes represented which meant that the  Office Of the Day’s mathematical skills were tested to the max.

The Norfolk Punt “Merlin” sailed by Club Commodore Drew Wilton and his daughter Elska provided an example of Punt sailing at its finest in the first race. This early race was won by YBOD Small White with Peter Robbins and family. Yeoman Sail number 118 skippered by Paul Wilcox and crewed by his family  pipped White Wave (YBOD) helmed by Amanda Davis by only some 2 seconds to add to the excitement.

Merlin then continued in this serious vane and  crossed the line first in the Fast Allcomers and Combined Allcomers. However, the Owen’s Norfolk Punt Gamecock finally beat Merlin in the Fast Allcomers on handicap: an exhilarating race for both with the welcome sun and wind adding to the drama.  For the Fast Allcomers Frosted Orange YBOD 104 manned by the ‘Friends on a fun day out’ came 2nd closely followed by Small White in 3rd place.

In the afternoon the YBOD or White Boat race saw a very tight competition with the Robbins team in Small White just pipping the Davis team in White Wave  by some 50 seconds.

Perfect sailing conditions and club members trying out different club boats meant serious racing underpinned by the simple joy of being out on the Broads.

Thanks to Annalis and Fred for Manning the Officers Box on Sunday
