Sunday at the Norfolk Punt Club sees a 100 year old punt win three races!

Starting in Caribbean conditions Prawn, a tradition Norfolk punt, (featured in the EDP Saturday magazine recently) who is celebrating her centenary this year, revelled in the light to moderate winds to romp home in fine style comfortably winning 3 races.  Prawns birthday party isn’t for two weeks, when she will be celebrating with another punt, Goldeneye who was also built in 1918. However Prawn, owned and sailed by Bill and Alison Glover decided to start the party early and won two open races against the fleet of white boats and one fast handicap.  The variable light airs built slowly throughout the morning and the YBOD fleet began to find that the frustrating holes in the wind and frequent shifts started to be less troublesome and so made better progress, but still found Prawn leading. It wasn’t until the mid-afternoon that the mixed fleet of Norfolk Dingy, Wayfarers and Punts began to live up to their handicaps and Simon and Fil Daniels led the fleet over the line on two occasions. The officer of the day had his work cut out with each race having a different course and it made life more interesting and kept helms focussed on the marks..most of the time. A grand days sailing for all concerned.

Lots of fun is planned for the invitation only celebration on the 21st July out on the Punt Club pontoons including a sail past by traditional sailing craft of the same era.
